Call for sound art, electroacoustic or experimental music

BEAMS (Boreal Electroacoustic Music Society) will be presenting an evening of performance and sound on Friday, June 28, 2019 in Edmonton, Alberta at The Works office gallery (10635 95 Street) as part of The Works Art & Design Festival. We require performances to present at this event!

 Performance pieces should be less than 15 minutes in duration and can consist of live, fixed media, improvisations, interactive works, solo or ensemble, exploring new audience performer paradigms, machine-human interactions, sound poetry---your imagination is the limit. An artist fee will be paid.

Send a brief description of your performance, link to video or audio support info, a short bio, number of performers, duration, technical requirements or space requirements to info@beams.ca by June 20, 2019.

Sound artists team up to take on Night of the Living Dead

Six local artists will band together to battle the zombie world when the Boreal Electroacoustic Music Society (BEAMS) co-presents Night of the Living Dead, Saturday March 23 at the Ortona Arts Armoury (9722-102 Street). Doors open at 8 p.m. for this all-ages event, which starts at 9 p.m.

The show will consist of a silent movie version of the 1968 George Romero horror classic Night of the Living Dead. Sonic suspense will be provided by experimentalists K Burwash, Damno Te, D.N.E., Mescalin, James Parrott and Stephen Sereda from the opening shriek to the final shot.

The event will also adopt a drive-in format, but without cars in the venue. Starting the show off will be filmed music videos by such local artists as Christine Miller, m.o.a.i.n., John Oparyk and others, interspersed with vintage footage of drive-in promotions. Admission to the show is $10 with BEAMS members getting a discount.

The Boreal Electroacoustic Music Society (BEAMS) is a not-for-profit society that uses the broadest and most inclusive definition of electroacoustic music, welcoming creativity in any medium. Members perform several concerts a year in addition to occasional recordings, festivals and workshops. Additional information can be found at beams.ca.

Art’s Birthday originated in 1963 when French surreal artist Robert Filliou declared that art didn’t exist until a million years ago when someone dropped a dry sponge into a pail of water. Choosing his own birthday of Jan. 17 to celebrate the event, Filliou proposed a public holiday, which has since been adopted by arts organizations and collectives in more than 20 nations worldwide.

Edmonton first held such an event in 2008, presented by the Film and Video Arts Society at the now-defunct ARTery. The Edmonton Arts Council staged Art’s Birthday at Scona Pool the following year. Since 2010, BEAMS has facilitated the event annually.

BEAMS Presents Art’s birthday 2019

Call for sound art, electroacoustic, experimental music performances, and digital visual art pieces.

It’s that time again Beamers! Art’s birthday is just around the corner. BEAMS (Boreal Electroacoustic Music Society) is looking for artists, both local and abroad, to take part in Edmonton’s celebration of Art! We will be celebrating on Saturday, January 19th, 2019 from 8pm until midnight at the Ortona Armoury. We are looking for artists to perform this night, along with digital artists to contribute to the projections that will be creatively mixed together over the course of the night. This year’s theme for Art’s Birthday is Diversity.

We are looking for individual or group performances that will be 15 minutes long, and digital art that is either in jpeg or mov format. Still visual artworks or movie clips should be no more than 1 minute long.

Another exciting dynamic for this year’s Art’s birthday (submissions depending) is that we would like to see if we can raise money for local artists and BEAMS by having an art sale! We are looking for artists who would like to hang works on the walls of the venue for the community to see and hopefully purchase. BEAMS would get a $5 donation for each sold work, which will go towards producing future BEAMS events.

Please send a brief description of your performance/sound artwork, a short bio, number of performers, technical requirements and if possible provide a link to audio or video support materials by Friday, December 14th 2018.

Edmonton-based experimental trio S’sE Sessions will make their first live appearance since being part of the award-winning film short The Moustache. The group, consisting of Trevor DePagie, Chris Samson and Hitoshi Sugiyama, contributed the soundtrack to the movie, which won Best Alberta Short (Live Action) at the Edmonton International Film Festival held earlier this fall.

Also performing live that night will be D.N.E., Skrunt Skrunt, KOLD, Stephen Sereda, Mescaline as well as “…and Jason Alexander as George.”

The event will also include international music videos by Marion Garver (USA), Marymotto (SPA), Paul Morris (GBR), Philippe Neau (FRA), Tamayurakurage (JPN), and Dawn Tuesday (USA) with Cousin Silas (GBR).

Presented in part by the Boreal Electroacoustic Music Society, the show is all-ages. Admission is $10 (BEAMS members $5) at the door.

Call for sound art, electroacoustic or experimental music

BEAMS (Boreal Electroacoustic Music Society) will be presenting a 12 hour performance and sound extravaganza on September 29, 2018 from 7 pm to 7 am the next morning as part of Nuit Blanche Edmonton. We require art works and performances to present at this event!

Works can be of any duration and can consist of live, fixed media, improvisations, interactive works, solo or ensemble, exploring new audience performer paradigms, machine-human interactions, sound poetry---your imagination is the limit. We also welcome proposals from curators who wish to put together a block of works over the evening. A nominal artist fee will be paid.
