The Boreal Electroacoustic Music Society (BEAMS) teams up with The Works Art & Design Festival to present eight acts who take on the event's theme of dialogue, resulting in unique ways of expressing the idea of communicating in unusual genres. To wit:

BEAMS at The Works: call to performers

BEAMS (Boreal Electroacoustic Music Society) will be presenting a concert as part of this year's The Works International Art & Design Festival. The event takes place June 29 at a gallery venue to be determined.

We require sonic artworks that explore the concept of “Dialogue”, this year's Works Festival theme as described below:

"Dialogue is essential to understanding. Not all dialogue is expressed in words. Interaction changes the course of a project, and often more questions remain than answers. Dialogue is about opening the evolution of an artwork to outside and potentially differing influences before the process is declared complete."

Performance pieces should be less than 12 minutes in duration and somehow explore this theme. It is open to interpretation how the idea of “dialogue” can be explored in the context of sound art and experimental music. Improvisations, interactive works, solo or ensemble, exploring new audience performer paradigms, machine-human interactions, sound poetry...your imagination is the limit.

Submit a description of your performance (especially as it relates to the festival theme), number of performers, duration of piece and technical requirements to info@beams.ca by June 7, 2017. An artist fee will be paid for performed works.

As part of worldwide weed-worshiping events, the Boreal Electroacoustic Music Society presents BEAMS 420, a multimedia event featuring five of the city's most interesting electronic-oriented acts, taking place Thursday, April 20 at Bohemia (10217-97 Street).

Shawn Pinchbeck, Brendan Anderson and Damno Te headline the event as they team up for their own soundtrack to the ridiculed B-movie propaganda flick Reefer Madness. Also featured will be a tandem involving John Armstrong and Brett Miles as well as a live debut by noise duo SWILL.

Showtime is 9 p.m. Admission is $10 (BEAMS members half-price). No minors.

Calgary experimental artists to invade Edmonton

EDMONTON — A handful of enterprising, experimental sound artists from Calgary’s Alberta
College of Art & Design venture north to Edmonton for a night of sonic innovation. Invited by
BEAMS president and electroacoustics professor Shawn Pinchbeck, who taught the students at
the college until 2016, the performers bring with them an arsenal of noise, sound and
unconventional music that’s not been heard outside of Calgary.

The show will feature works by Callum Beckford, who incorporates homemade synthesizers
with commercial gear, as well as the duo of Kerry Maguire and Gwen Morgan, who craft their
compositions with the use of field recordings, drum beats and live synthesizers. Also included on
the bill is DTH LVL, a tandem act comprised of Eric Makwich and Matthew Henry, who
perform a dark and grimy blend of electronic and noise sounds.

This production is presented by the Boreal Electroacoustic Music Society, an organization that
promotes and nurtures sound-oriented artworks, creators and performers.

Callum Beckford

Callum Beckford Is a wide-eyed wanderlust filled sound artist from Calgary Alberta. His performances incorporate homemade synthesizers and effects as well as commercial gear. Through analogue and digital processing of sound, he strives to gain a deeper understanding of the ethereal nature of sound and how it exists both as a physical experience and a conscious phenomena.

Kerry Maguire and Gwen Morgan

"Champagne Wishes and Caviar Dreams" is an ongoing live sound performance by Kerry Maguire and Gwen Morgan. Crafted from field recordings, drum beats and live synthesizer, it is a project that incorporates audio from in around each space it is performed; playing on memory, deja vu and melding contemporary electronic music with experimental audio.

Gwen Morgan and Kerry Maguire are artists and musicians from Calgary, Alberta. They both pursue individual art practices as students at the Alberta College of Art + Design, and have collaborated on many audio and sculptural installations. They have also played in bands together, such as Juice Box and Crims & Flow.

DTH LVL are a dark and grimy blend of electronic and noise. in the immortal words of roni size: "do you think that you can hang tough when the rhythm gets gruff and the dj says, "i think you've had enough"?"

Art’s Birthday Edmonton celebrates 10 years

EDMONTON—The Boreal Electroacoustic Music Society will commemorate 10 years of Art’s Birthday Edmonton with a special show taking place Saturday, Jan. 14 at the Ortona Armoury (9722-102 Street). The event, Art’s Birthday 2017, pairs seven local acts with works by seven international composers and soundscape artists, some of whom created works specifically for this occasion.


Women will comprise the majority of local performers gracing the stage, with pianist Himiko, saxophonist Allison Balcetis, noise duo Harshmellow and Chapman stick player Dale Ladouceur slated to play. Rounding out the live lineup will be keyboardist and music journalist Mike Ross, software sound designer SkruntSkrunt and guitarist Dave Wall.


Works will be by Dai Fujikura and Tamayurakurage (Japan) Hari Maia (Brazil), Mental Escape Pod (Austria), Nobodisoundz (France), James Shearman (England), and Marymotto (Spain). Videos will be courtesy John Osborne and Christine Miller.

Art’s Birthday originated in 1963 when French surreal artist Robert Filliou declared that art didn’t exist until a million years ago when someone dropped a dry sponge into a pail of water. Choosing his own birthday of Jan. 17 to celebrate the event, Filliou proposed a public holiday, which has since been adopted by arts organizations and collectives in more than 20 nations worldwide. Edmonton first held such an event in 2008, presented by the Film and Video Arts Society at the now-defunct ARTery. The Edmonton Arts Council staged Art’s Birthday at Scona Pool the following year. Since 2010, BEAMS has facilitated the event annually.


Doors for Art’s Birthday open at 7 p.m., with the show starting at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door. BEAMS members get in for half-price.

Mark Meloche has been performing harsh noise since 2004, using the name Damno Te at the beginning. This show he will performing his modified snowshoe.
Frozenlake121
Andrew Hall / Frozenlake121 is an experimental artist who keeps one foot in the digital realm, the other in the electro-acoustic, and his heart in creative exploration. His piece "Fork In The Rhodes" is both prearranged and improvised on laptop and office intercom units. The downtempo minimalist electronics reflect a somber consideration of recent events, things to come and the painful indecision that binds it all together. As one's thoughts run in circles, a feedback loop ensues. But only if you let it.
AGAPERAYGUNEXPERIMENT
Philip Jagger is an Edmonton based musician who likes to push the edges of poetry, music, sound and video. This piece is the mediation of temple in the forest to the mediation of the temples of video games - temple arcadi is the piece. Long time member, Shannon Land will also be performing during this set.

Mark Meloche presents "The Screaming Skull!" With performances by Himiko, Stephen Sereda, SkruntSkrunt, Gene Kosowan, and Mark Meloche. Free outdoor show so no need for earplugs folks. Tunes start at 1pm.

The Boreal Electroacousitc Music Society will present an evening of experimental sound and video as part of the Works Festival of Art and Design of Monday, June 27 at 7 pm in the Stanley Milner Library Edmonton Room. Local sound artists Himiko, Stephen Sereda, S’sE SESSIONS, Wayne DeFehr, Phillip Jagger, Don Ross and Billie Zizi will present live guitars, vocals, clarinet, piano and bass with electronic processing, along with software that generates sound from visuals, AI from video games, cosplay, dance and video from John Osborne, Phil Jagger and Christine Miller.

S’sE SESSIONS performs live music that ranges from experimental to ambient score oriented soundscapes to progressive bumpy beats; bowed and plucked basses, turn tables/sampling, sequences, live looped and live guitar, and samples and synths make up our scored and ad lib set. We will be adding guest members for tracks to upcoming shows to fulfill the ‘sessions’ aspect of S’sE.

In 1963 French Fluxus artist Robert Filliou declared that January 17 a
million years ago was the birth of art, when someone dropped a sponge in a
bucket of water. Since then, artists around the world have held events in
honour of Art's Birthday. We at BEAMS are proud to have hosted the Edmonton
version for the last few years, curated by our own Philip Jagger. Phil's
call for submissions for this year's show on January 22 is below. You can
respond directly to him at the email listed below:


* On January 22 at bohemia
* The theme for this year is Art Exchange
* All beamers will be paired up with a beams member or an international artist.
* You will find out a month in advance of the show or if you dare the day of.
* The maximum amount of time allotted for each beams member pair up is 20  minutes
* also if you know visual artists there will be an art swap, so artists can come and swap their art.

First off, damn magpies like magpies.

And like magpies, they happily devote themselves (in groups of two to six) to making the most extraordinary sounds while hopping about looking for more sounds to make and things to steal. Also like magpies, damn magpies overwinter in Edmonton and enjoy the way snow changes the sound of the sounds they make.
