Art's Birthday 2020. 6pm to midnight
For the first time in more than a decade, the
Edmonton contingent involved in the international Art’s Birthday event comes
back to the Old Strathcona neighbourhood, with its irreverent take on culture.
This year’s event, presented once again by the Boreal Electroacoustic Music
Society, takes place Saturday, Jan. 18 at 8 p.m. at the Old Strathcona
Community League (10139-87 Avenue). An art exhibition at the same location
starts at 6 p.m.
Performing live at the event, Art’s Birthday
Edmonton 2020, will be Blip Vert, frozenlake121, Shawn Pinchbeck, Karl Michael
Toepfer, Skrunt Skrunt, Damno Te, Pizzarhea! And SWILL. Videos between sets
will include those by Eiduneau, Fecal Point, Mescalin and John Oparyk.
Some of the Artists displaying a variety of
their works for the art exhibition starting at 6pm are local artists Leah
Wilson, Brenda Philp, and Blane Klack.
Come by to view their works, socialize, and inquire about purchasing if
there is something that catches your eye.
Art’s Birthday Edmonton previously ran in Old Strathcona at the
Scona Pool in 2009, the second time the event was held in the city. It first took
place in 2008 at the now-defunct ARTery. Other locations that hosted Art’s
Birthday include the Ortona Armoury, Bohemia, Naked Cyber Café and the
now-defunct Brittany’s Lounge.
Art’s Birthday originated in 1963 when French surreal artist
Robert Filliou declared that art didn’t exist until a million years ago when
someone dropped a dry sponge into a pail of water. Choosing his own birthday of
Jan. 17 to celebrate the event, Fillious proposed a public holiday in
celebration of art. It has since been adopted by participants in more than 20
countries.
Admission to Art’s Birthday Edmonton 2020 is $10 for beams members and $20 for guests who will also receive a free membership.
